Recanzone Ranch

Located in Northern Nevada's Paradise Valley, the Recanzone Ranch totals 910 acres.  In the past, the ranch hosted a cow-calf operation, running 150 mother cows. Carlo “Butch” Recanzone states that the ranch, together with its public allotments, would feed its cows 90% of the time without buying hay. Nearing retirement, the Recanzones sold their cattle three years ago and now lease the ranch to another cattle operator. Butch also now grows and harvests 100 acres of hay.

The ranch comes with water rights to 432 of its total acres. 386 acres are irrigated farmland, including 294 pastureland acres and 92 hayland acres. 536 are rangeland acres, and approximately 20 acres consist of ranch headquarters, house, bunkhouse, barn, outbuildings, sheds, and equipment. The property is bordered by agricultural lands on three sides.

The ranch contains about a mile of Cottonwood Creek.  In “wet” years, native trout travel south into the town of Paradise; in drought years, the creek is often wildlife's only source of water for the northwestern portion of Paradise Valley. Regardless of precipitation, Cottonwood Creek is a magnet for wildlife, including mule deer, yellow-breasted chat, willow flycatchers, burrowing and short-eared owls, and other riparian-dependent species.

The Recanzone Ranch contains several historically significant buildings, such as a granite bunkhouse built by Antone Ramasco. Pete Farroro, Antone Ramasco and Charley Zorio built the Recanzone home ranch. Today, the barn and bunkhouse are still standing and in use at nearly 100 years old. The bunkhouse's granite and “hipped-roof” design is emblematic of the stonemason period. The Recanzones' house, also crafted by Italian stonemasons, has 24-inch exterior walls and 18-inch interior walls. You can check it out from County Road 290 as you leave the town of Paradise.

Located roughly 40 miles south is the town of Winnemucca, the agricultural-services center for north-central Nevada.  Winnemucca has all the standard businesses and resources needed to supply a ranch, including banks, auto repair shops, grocery stores, and home/ranch supply stores. National Range Conservation Services and the Farm Service Agency have regional offices located in Winnemucca.

Overview of Paradise Valley

Location

Paradise Valley stands out as an oasis surrounded by what is otherwise an unforgiving desert.
The small town of Paradise is located 38 miles northeast of Winnemucca, with the valley extending roughly 40 miles north-to-south and 12 miles east-to-west. It sits at an elevation of about 4,4500 feet and is surrounded by mountains on three sides, including 9,700-foot Santa Rosa Peak. Several biologically-significant creeks, including Cottonwood and Martin Creeks, drain southward into the Little Humboldt River. The Little Humboldt continues south to Winnemucca, where it joins the meandering main stem of the Humboldt River.

Wildlife

Paradise Valley's hay meadows and riparian habitats have been maintained in a largely natural ecological condition. As a result, the wildlife habitat values are among the most productive and diverse in the state. Native game animals such as mule deer, pronghorn antelope, greater sage grouse, and California quail all depend on private ranchlands. The area is also important for introduced upland game species such as ring-necked pheasant and wild turkey. Several waterfowl species nest in Paradise Valley's wet meadows, including mallard, gadwall, cinnamon teal, blue-winged teal, and northern pintail. The wet meadows also support nesting long-billed curlew, willet, Wilson's snipe, Wilson's phalarope, and sandhill cranes.

History

Shoshone, Goshute, Bannock and Paiute people lived in north-central Nevada for centuries. Nomadic tribes, they survived by hunting, fishing and gathering.
Anglos most likely first arrived in Paradise Valley in the early 19th century, when Peter Skene Ogden of Hudson's Bay Company came looking for beaver. Some forty years later, other European Americans followed to prospect for high-grade ore in the Santa Rosa Mountains. After that, settlers from New England, German farmers, Italian stonemasons, Hispanic-Californian vaqueros, Chinese laborers, and Basque sheepherders came to Paradise Valley to develop its water resources and build an agriculturally-based community.
In the proceeding decades, sagebrush and greasewood were cleared, water diverted, grasses and crops planted or expanded as ranchers carved out livelihoods.
The first settlers focused on simple structures fashioned mostly of sod and scruffy local timber. These “soddies” were intended to provide usable but impermanent shelter. Paradise Valley architecture improved dramatically when Italian craftsmen arrived in the 1860s. They used stone to construct buildings similar in style to their homes in the Piedmonte region of Italy – cleaved granite, mortar, and hipped roofs. Most of their work still stands as testament to their dedication to both structural longevity and aesthetic values.
