Location and Area Analysis:

The Sandhill Feedlot is located just 12 miles north of Winnemucca, the county seat of Humboldt County.  With a population of 7,396, Winnemucca boasts 5 major casinos, 21 hotels/motels, 31 dining establishments, 12 banking service providers, 18 churches of various faiths, postal service, UPS and FedEx offices, and a Bureau of Land Management office.  There are 3 elementary schools, 1 junior high school, and 1 high school.

The main industries are cattle and sheep ranching, and gold/silver mining.  Annual ranch-related events include the Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo, the Western States Ranch Rodeo Association Finals, the Superior Livestock sale and barbeque, and the Silver State International Rodeo. 

For transportation, Interstate 80 passes east/west through Winnemucca, and US Route 95 runs north/south through town.  An Amtrak station has daily trains to Chicago and San Francisco.  There are also Greyhound services and a municipal airport.  Winnemucca is located 167 miles east of Reno, which has an international airport.

Located 130 miles to the southwest, the Fallon Livestock Exchange has live sales every Tuesday for all species of small and large livestock.  Winnemucca is surrounded on all sides by cattle producers; close proximity to the state line makes this a great place to get calves ready for California grass.
