Water Availability: Irrigation water for the ranch is from Foreman, Winters, and California Creeks, which are seasonal streams originating in the Independence Mountains. There are springs and seeps located on the ranch which contribute to the irrigation flows. In average water years there is sufficient water for a first and partial second cutting on the irrigated field crop lands, and to irrigate the meadow and wild pasture areas. There is also sufficient early water for wet irrigation of some of the dry pasture areas. Irrigation System: Foreman Creek is partially diverted to an underground mainline that serves an 8-tower, low pressure, water-drive center-pivot system. The same mainline with additional mainlines serves three ¼-mile wheel-move systems and hand lines. The sprinkler system including the center pivot, wheel-moves, and hand lines are pressurized by a “Cornell” booster pump powered by a “Dutze” air diesel engine, Serial #79285, which is supported by a 1,000-gallon steel fuel tank. The balance of the ranch is wild flood irrigated from open ditches. The balance of the ranch is wild flood irrigated from open ditches. There is a series of custom steel diversion boxes in Foreman Creek that serve conveyance and contour ditches. Underground pipe drains have been installed in high water table portions of the property. Some of these drains have release valves which allow drainage when the water table is high and can be closed for irrigation when the water table lowers. A series of shallow open drains have been constructed to convey drainage water back into the irrigation system. Substantial portions of the dry pasture areas are being irrigated from open ditches during the early spring runoff, enhancing the dry pasture production.
